Matthew’s Gospel records that when Jesus saw “harassed and helpless” crowds, He told His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field” (Matthew 9:36-38, NIV).
This month, we’re asking God to provide immeasurably more workers – more women to fill our Planning Teams, more women to guide Stonecroft Bible Studies, more Stonecroft Military volunteers, and more women to establish outreach hubs in communities nationwide.
How might God answer our prayers for more co-laborers? Only He knows. I pray, among other requests, that the new believers, who our volunteers harvest, will quickly become harvesters.
Such was the case with the Samaritan woman who met Jesus at the well (John 4). One heart-to-heart conversation with the Messiah was all it took for her to become a missionary to her town. When Jesus’ disciples happened upon her discussion with Him, she left her water jar at the well and went to tell others about the One who could offer living streams.
I remember the night I first met Jesus “at the well.” Before I heard the Gospel, I spent years wondering if I’d done enough good works to please God. When I finally understood that eternal life is a gift from God, not a goal to attain, I wanted everyone to know about it. My lack of evangelism training didn’t stop me from sharing the Gospel.
It’s often said that God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called. We see this throughout Scripture. Jesus made ordinary fishermen into “fishers of men.” He enlisted a tax collector to give away heavenly treasure. He turned Saul, who zealously persecuted Christians, into Paul, a tireless proclaimer of Christ.
So, let’s ask God to help us reap a harvest of harvesters. The neighbor, friend, or co-worker we least expect to receive the Gospel might not only accept it but share it freely.
