We feel a renewed hope at this time of year for what’s ahead, for what could be different, and for what could be better. Many of us list our resolutions, while others barely think beyond next week’s to-do list. Wherever you are in the process, I encourage you to pause and reflect on the people and experiences you have been given this past year. Who are these people? How have you been shaped by the moments and seasons with them? Scottish poet Robert Burns said it well:

“Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne.
We’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.”

Burns’ words resound from streets and parties every New Year’s Eve. Many of us have sung them over and over, but have you ever stopped to think about what these words mean? “Auld lang syne” means “for old time’s sake.” Burns actually beckoned us to remember people. And rightfully so!  We have shed tears with others, exchanged hugs and smiles with them, and perhaps had conversations over steamy cups of coffee. So as a new year begins, let’s heed Burns’ words. Let our hearts fill with joy and gratitude for the people in our lives during 2016.
