I just need to get organized! Whether it’s a long to-do list at work or multiple errands and personal tasks to perform, we all have work to accomplish each day. We may begin the day thinking that no matter what, we’ll get this phone call made, answer this email, read that story, prepare a good dinner. Then at the end of the day, we feel disheartened because none of those things happened.

So what’s a person to do? Consider these three ways to help organize your day and to lessen those feelings of being overwhelmed.

1. Quit procrastinating.

Procrastination is so easy to do, especially when it involves a task you’d rather not handle. When you feel like you want to put something off, ask yourself, “What am I avoiding?”

2. Make a plan.

Sometimes we just don’t remember to plan ahead. But take the time to think through the day ahead of you. Set your least-liked tasks during your best time of day and go for it. Be careful to be realistic in your plans. Don’t set yourself up for disappointment by putting too many expectations on yourself for that day.

3. Lighten up on perfectionism.

We can be our own best critic and deflator. Resist tendencies you may have toward getting something “just right.” Show yourself some grace in the course of the day. Remember, doing your best doesn’t mean it has to be perfect.

Maybe you’ve tried before to get better organized and it hasn’t worked. Don’t give up! Try again! The results will be worth it.
