Tap. Tap. Tap.

It was a tradition that began before I can remember.  It might land on my arm, or my cheek or my hand.

The taps were gently placed and a consistent reminder of my father’s love for me.  Those three taps were my dad’s silent way of saying, “I love you.”

They came on my wedding day and my graduation, but also most often on the couch while we watched TV or on Sunday mornings at church.  Sometimes they came after we had argued.

Over and over again, he would remind me that, even when we didn’t see eye to eye, he loved me.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

Because there were three of them, I couldn’t mistake them for anything less than his love.  They were deliberate and intentional.  They weren’t ever embarrassing.  It was his secret code to my heart.

I’m so thankful for that tradition.  I’ve passed it along to my children.  The beautiful part is that they “say” it to me almost as often as I do.

Tap, tap, tap as I read them stories at night.  Tap, tap, tap as we do dishes.  Tap, tap, tap as they climb out of the car in the morning.

How does your heavenly Father remind you He loves you?  Do you recognize His gentle touch? Do you feel His kind of tap-tap-tap on your heart?

His taps for me are when the sun shines through the clouds the right way, when I breathe in the scent of my mom when we hug, and the sound of the leaves under my feet in the fall.  I especially experience the tap-tap-tap from heaven when my favorite worship song comes on.  There have been broken times in my life when His taps came as His blanket of peace wrapped around me.

His love for you cannot be shaken.  No matter where you’ve been or what burden you carry, your heavenly Father will never stop tapping your heart to tell you He loves you and He is for you.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken.
