“Because of Christ and our faith in him, we can now come boldly and confidently into God’s presence.” – Ephesians 3:12

I simply do not have access to some places I’d love to see or to meet some key people of interest. Wouldn’t it be fabulous to have a special ticket to the backstage of our favorite Broadway musical? Or what would it look and feel like to have an invitation to boldly enter the Oval Office? What if we could waltz in with our heads held high, feeling comfortable enough to cozy up on one of its couches?

Unfortunately, there is too much red tape for most of the scenarios we might paint in our minds. Though we can daydream about how it might be, that is as far as our fantasies will go. But dream with me. Pretend that someone you admire extends you an invitation to a dinner. Although you feel less than adequate, you decide to accept. With anxiety pulsing through your veins, you drive to his home and knock on his door. Sheepishly you enter, unsure if you really belong.

Suddenly, you’re ushered into a home that feels warm and inviting; the walls are covered with bookshelves filled with family pictures. As your eyes scan the rest of the space, they land on a table in the corner, set for two. In the middle are your favorite flowers, as if your host – the one you admire – researched your favorite colors and your favorite scents.

You feel overwhelmed. You feel at home. You feel loved.

Every uneasy feeling goes away as you exhale and realize you were meant to be there. Your host enters the room and begins asking you questions, longing to hear about the details of your life. The more you get to know one another, the more you feel like yourself. You realize your posture has changed, your shoulders are back and your chin is held high. You feel confident. You’ve been asked to participate in a conversation, and a powerful one at that. As much as your host longs to hear about you, you long to hear from him.

It’s a nice daydream – one that could possibly happen in a movie or in a novel. But eventually, like all of humanity, we will inevitably fail one another. It might have felt nice to be warmly welcomed by someone we admire, but we would ultimately find out he is limited, just like we are.

But there is another room we have been invited into, and it is full of our favorite flowers – scents that bring us to specific memories and pictures of our family. There is someone who loves us so deeply that He would go to the extent of numbering the hairs on our head (Matthew 10:30), equipping us for every good work (2 Timothy 3:17), and giving us everything we need for an abundant life (John 10:10). Not only are we this loved, but it is also lavished on us by a Creator who has unlimited power (Psalm 115:3), unlimited knowledge (1 John 3:20), and unmatched authority (Job 42:2).

And He has given us the freedom to enter His throne room, to sit at His table and engage Him in conversation – no matter our state, appearance, doubts, or questions. We call this conversation prayer, and every day it’s ours to freely partake.

Questions:

  1. Try imagining yourself in a room with God. What does the room look like? What does it smell like? What does it feel like to be talking with God?
  2. Sometimes we fall to our knees in reverence of God and other times we can boldly pull up a chair at His table. Try this today and start a conversation with Him, boldly sharing your heart.

Prayer:

God, thank You that I can boldly access Your throne at any time. What a privilege. May I not take this gift for granted, but instead, enjoy the unforced rhythms of Your grace and the conversation that comes with it. Amen.
