When we walked into the room, it took our breath away.

The view silenced us, and that’s saying a lot considering I was accompanied by my two precious teenagers. This happened to be a private, exclusive (read: “swank”) lounge at the top of the tallest skyscraper in the city.

We stood in awe of millions of twinkling lights shining below us in the darkness.

Once again, God reminded me that the things He has for me are far beyond what I could ever plan for myself. He reminded me to trust His hand.

My two oldest had come with me on a trip where I would attend meetings while they played. I was hoping it would afford great opportunities for conversation and fun together. The problem was, I would normally “plan” the fun. This time, we’d only had time to grab our bags and leave. I was without an agenda, and my controlling mind wondered how we’d fare without it. As we traveled between cities, I prayed that God would surprise us with something unexpected and interesting that would make a memory for them.

He abundantly answered my prayer that night. We strolled a Riverwalk, ate sushi, explored a beautifully lit park, played pinball, and were graciously allowed to enjoy the lounge at the top of the skyscraper. There was no hurry, no pressure, and just joy.

I think God loves it when we come to the end of our plans. When we let Him unfold the way before us, He does incredible things. In my mind, I think, “but there has to be a plan!” And God says, there is a plan, but it is mine, and you are to trust Me step by step.

It must’ve looked to Moses like there was no plan, but then the water parted. Surely Abraham and Sarah thought the same thing until the baby was born. Even the disciples had to wonder where the plan was when Jesus was crucified, but then came Sunday.

Our plans will never be like His. I’m so thankful for that. Transitions will come, and we will wonder how in the world it will turn out. That’s when God shows up: faithful, glorious, unexpected, and so good to us.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.
