I can’t believe I would say something is not personal, but I gotta tell you, when it comes to my faith, it’s not personal. It can’t be just mine. It can’t be private. And it can’t be something I treasure so dearly that I refuse – overtly or subconsciously – to share it with others.

I’m convicted by this as I sit in my office and pray about and ponder resources and ways to encourage women to share their faith. I’m convicted by this when I stand in an elevator with someone I don’t know and simply smile. I’m convicted by this when I think of the few conversations I’ve had with my next-door neighbors this year.

Seems like I’ve kept my faith personal. Ouch.

“My first calling is to live the Lordship of Christ, the Kingdom of God in my life and in the world that I inhabit, in my neighborhood. Everything else flows from there. … I speak about engagement, culture, ethics, the issues of our day. But it would be nothing if I wasn’t in my neighborhood and engaging those very issues with real people … .”

David Fitch, a Christian author, seminary professor, and church planter in the Chicago area, shared these thoughts during a recent episode of “The Calling,” a podcast produced by Christianity Today. Fitch’s words struck a chord with me.

I asked myself, What do I have to give away to women in my world?

  1. A faith that saves, sustains, and stays
  2. Love and leadership
  3. Resources (God’s, not mine!) that will continue to build into the next generation
  4. A life of prayer that can and should be spent on things that matter to God
Oh, Lord. Please help me not to become so consumed with my busy life that I miss giving You away. Prompt me to respond in Your way, in Your time, and to give generously of all that You have showered on me. And help me to be quick to listen, quick to obey, and quick to share generously with the women You bring along my path. Amen.

“Give away your life; you’ll find life given back, but not merely given back—given back with bonus and blessing. Giving, not getting, is the way. Generosity begets generosity.”
