And I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’

– Acts 20:35

Why is it so hard to give?

We know it always makes our hearts happy when we do things for others, but it is rarely our initial reaction when the opportunity presents itself. The Bible says we should be a “constant example” of helping people in need. Not a “sometimes example,” when it fits in our schedule, or we have a little extra cash. We should always be thinking of ways we can bless others with the time, talents, gifts, and finances that the Lord has entrusted to us. None of it is really ours. It all belongs to our Father who asks us to work hard and use everything that we have for His glory to show love to others. He isn’t directing us to work hard to have a bigger house or a new car. He’s telling us to work hard for the benefit of others that by this, we will then be blessed.

If only we would let go of the grip on our wallets and allow God to use what He has given us for His benefit, we would have exceedingly more than we could imagine. We hold tight out of fear and selfishness, listening to the lies the enemy wants us to believe and strangling the means by which we can do the Lord’s work. We suffocate ourselves with obligations of our choosing so that we have no time or energy left to bless others. When we live for ourselves, our ambitions, and our circle of influence, we quiet the ability for God to purpose our lives. Freeing ourselves of these strongholds means being intentional about serving others every day. Give our time. Give our talents. Give our expertise. Give our money. Because ultimately we want to be transformed in our minds to give His time, give His talents, give His expertise, give His money with the promise to receive His blessings.
