Alexandra Ignatova is the Stonecroft Bible Studies leader in Bulgaria. I spent time in May with Alexandra, her family and volunteers as part of Stonecroft’s international trip to Bulgaria, Hungary, and Switzerland. Through Alexandra’s life, God is showing what He can do through one woman. Alexandra’s Stonecroft journey started when her husband, who was a gifted architect in Sofia, decided that God had a career change for him. He believed God called him to go to seminary. That changed their stable, comfortable life, and they left that security to go to seminary in France. While living and studying in France, Alexandra was introduced to Stonecroft Bible Studies. When seminary was completed they returned to Bulgaria. As her husband started pastoring, Alexandra felt compelled to find a way to get Stonecroft Bible Studies available in Bulgarian. “I knew nothing about translating, layout, or publishing but just felt we had to have these studies,” she told me. “Gradually the Lord provided the way to get the studies available to our women.” Despite limited resources, God helped Alexandra find the ways and means to accomplish this daunting challenge. It is now 15 years later, and there are 13 Stonecroft Bible Studies available in Bulgarian. God has raised up Nina as a ministry partner, as well as other leaders excited about using the Bible studies. In May, we met 42 of the these leaders and took part in two actual Bible studies. What a joy to be with our sisters. They share our heart for God and His Word, and care for those in their communities who don’t know Him. There are now 20 to 35 studies going on in Bulgaria at any time, most of them in communities with no evangelical church. Stonecroft Bible studies are introducing the God of the Bible to Bulgarians raised under atheistic communism, Islamic, or rigid Orthodox backgrounds. Alexandra has become a heroine to me. She obeyed God at great personal cost and effort (but would deny she has done anything exceptional). Her husband, the head of his denomination, told me that he feels that what Alexandra does is of equal importance to what he does within the church. Stonecroft Bible Studies are doing what they do everywhere! Women and men meet Jesus Christ. Christian women mature in their faith and find a tool for reaching out to others. Stonecroft is connecting women with God, each other, and their communities—in Bulgaria! Alexandra’s vision continues. She is now looking for the ways and means to get Who Is Jesus?, What is God Like, Where is the Holy Spirit?, and Why Believe? translated and into communities in Bulgaria. Won’t you pray for her and the resources, translators, and leaders needed as they work on these next studies? Alexandra inspires me to be faithful and diligent! Are we diligently and persistently doing what God has asked us to do? Won’t you ask God how He wants to use your “power of one” to serve Him and others!
