In the New Testament, we are all commanded to be hospitable as an expression of our love for others. Author Henri Nouwen says hospitality is reaching out to those who may be estranged from their culture, country, friends, family, or God. He writes, “Hospitality, therefore, means primarily the creation of a free space where the stranger can enter and become a friend instead of an enemy.” The purpose of hospitality is not to change people, but to offer them space where change can take place—a place to belong. For many people in today's post-Christian culture, the desire to belong is often part of their journey to believe.
