When Peter and John healed a lame beggar in Jesus’ name, the religious establishment was disturbed. They had the two disciples seized and imprisoned. Although jail time wasn’t in Peter and John’s plan, nothing can thwart God’s plan. The number of people who believed the gospel message continued to grow. Acts 4:1-22 records the interaction of Peter and John with the religious leaders. One thing especially impresses me when I read this passage—the disciples’ unswerving boldness in lifting up the name of Jesus. Imprisonment and intimidation could not stop them. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, they proclaimed, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved” (v. 12). These men floored the religious leaders. I love how verse 13 describes the leaders’ reaction: “When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.” God uses ordinary people in extraordinary ways. So when it feels like you are experiencing a setback in ministry, remember that nothing can thwart God’s plan. Allow the Holy Spirit to encourage and empower you. Keep lifting up the name of Jesus and sharing the message of His salvation. And the watching world will take note of these ordinary people who have been with Jesus.
