His compassion and attention were extended to the rich and poor, elite and outcast, grateful and ungrateful. He told His closest friends, ". . . Whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many" (Matthew 20:28, NIV). Faith and good works go hand in hand. In Ephesians 2:8-10, after describing the gift of salvation that we receive from God by faith, Paul goes on to explain, "[God] has created us anew in Christ Jesus so that we can do the good things he planned for us long ago" (NLT). As believers, we have work to do. God equips us for this life of faith and service through His Word, the Bible. Second Timothy 3:16-17 reminds us that "all Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right. It is God's way of preparing us in every way, fully equipped for every good thing God wants us to do" (NLT). Faith in action is also an important component of evangelism. Demonstrating God's love through acts of service helps open the hearts of others to discover and embrace faith for themselves. Acts 9 tells us of a disciple named Dorcas "who was always doing good and helping the poor" (v. 36). Her kindness in clothing others and caring about their needs brought many widows into the family of believers in Joppa. Stonecroft women are following Dorcas' example of loving people to Jesus by reaching out to others with acts of service. It's why women in Tennessee have gone to the streets to find women to help clothe and invite for a meal. In Oregon, women who care about homeless teens have offered them free haircuts, pizza, and a safe place to hang out. Stonecroft women are going where other women are hurting—from abuse or unexpected pregnancies or struggles with addiction—and offering a helping hand, a listening ear, a caring heart, a word of truth, a whispered prayer. As the love of Jesus and the hope of the Gospel is being lived out in everyday life, people are coming to know Christ. What good things has God planned for you to do? Who does Jesus want you to serve today? Equip yourself through God's Word. Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you with His love. Then, get ready for the adventure! Suppose you see a brother or sister who needs food or clothing, and you say, 'Well, good-bye and God bless you; stay warm and eat well'—but then you don't give that person any food or clothing.
